Akhenaten (also spelled Akhenaten; meaning “the living soul of Aton”) was also known before the fifth year of his reign as Amenhotep IV. A pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty ruled Egypt for 17 years and died perhaps in 1336 BC or 1334 BC. He is best known for his abandonment of traditional Egyptian polytheism and the introduction of a new cult centered on Aten, which is sometimes described as a monotheistic or hinthian religion. Early inscriptions represent Aton with the sun, in comparison with the stars, and later the official language avoided calling Aton a god, giving him the solar deity a higher status than just being a god.

Akhenaten tried to paradox the traditional religion, but was ultimately unacceptable. After his death, traditional religious practice was gradually restored, and after a few years, some rulers were not without clear rights to succession from the Eighteenth Dynasty, so they established a new family, and damaged the reputation of Akhenaten and his successors, referring to Akhenaten himself as the “enemy” in archival records.
